According to Bruce Wayne Tucker, there are five stages of group development. This theory is based on the process of a group coming together, getting to know each other, developing a group dynamic and after all working together as a whole team where everyone benefits from each other.【大学生英语作文】
The first stage is called Forming. Forming is when members of a newly formed group meets for the first time to collaborate on a project. This occasion gives each member a chance to introduce themselves and express to the other members what they plan to contribute to the project. The second stage is storming. During the storming stage, group members are basically competing to have their ideas heard or recognized. This can sometimes cause conflict within the group, in which case, the group leader is needed. The role of the group leader is very important during this stage. The third stage is norming. When there is no longer conflict and group members respect one another’s opinions and are working together as a team, this is called norming. The fourth stage, performing , is when the group is now working together harmoniously as a team. Members are focused on reaching the goal and are trusting and relying on each other. Each member is working independently and is able to solve intragroup disagreements without the aid of the group leader or facilitator. The group is successful at this stage. It is important to note however, that certain situations can arise and set a group back a stage or maybe even two. For example, a new member with opposing ideas can set a group that’s at stage four, the performing stage, back to stage two , the storming stage. The last stage is the adjourning stage. This is when the project is complete and the members of the group are moving on to other projects. I didn’t know what adjourning meant until I did some research recently for this discussion. I’ve always heard it in a court room, when the judge says “The court will adjourn in five minutes”. While researching I found that adjourning means exactly that. As a group adjourning will give them time to see more eye to eye. Say for an instance someone in the groups starts an argument, which can be a weakness. The group sets a meeting up at a different time, which will give them the time and energy to reflect on what the problematic was at that time and being. Or maybe there is a different atmosphere the groups believe will inspire them more. In the end any time there is a difficult moment in a group, in order to be successful adjourning will be a great decision to keep good process as a whole.【大学生英语作文】
The five stages of group development are basic elements needed to be a successful empowering group. Forming the group though doesn’t just happen. Members are uncertain about the structure, propose and leadership of the group at this time. The group moves on to the next stage when the members think of themselves as part of the group. The next stage is storming. The storming stage is complete when the members have a relatively clear idea of the hierarchal picture of leadership within the group. Then in the norming stage, close relationships develop and the group structure becomes one with the group members. In the fourth stage the structure of the group is accepted by group members and is fully functional. The group is now performing the task at hand. This is also the last stage for permanent work groups. Groups that are temporary move on to the final stage of adjourning. In this stage, the group wraps things up and look back on what was accomplished. Even though there are five stages in a group development, the group doesn’t have to be in one at a time.【大学生英语作文】
The different stages aren’t always black and white. Some stages can be performed simultaneously. On occasion, the group will regress to previous stages. But for the most part, the group progresses to completing the common initial goal / task. The group members don’t just accomplish the task; they also form wonderful friendships among themselves. Without a great deal of communication with each member, the group will never get to the next stage and getting the task done as a group will seem impossible.
Being in a group can be very beneficial if people can complete five stages of group development. People are all led by their natural desire to be liked by others and accepted among their peers. After all, when you have to cooperate with someone for a longer period, it’s easier to do it if you get along well. The five stages of team development can help teams keep moving forward.
